Oh My Langos: A Budapest Bite You’ll Never Forget

Two full beer glasses and a cheesy pastry langos on a tray sit on a wooden table. Background has a white and red mural. Cozy setting.

Have you ever eaten something that changed the trajectory of your life as you knew it?

Okay, maybe it’s a bit dramatic to talk about a circle of fried dough this way, but the Langos in Budapest really did this for me. From the ease of finding the street food to the unbeatable prices to the simplicity of the dish, I definitely think it deserves one of the top places in my list of unbeatable nibbles.

What is Langos? Learn About The Traditional Hungarian Street Food

Typically, when buying langos you will find several options, but the traditional, albeit simple, is truly the best. I felt the simplicity really made the tastiness of the dish shine. The traditional option is the fried dough topped with sour cream, cheese, and the option to add garlic. This is the choice I continued to go with, as they say “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Retro Langos Budapest: A Must-Visit Spot

One of the most popular places in Budapest to get langos is called Retro Langos, located in District V. It’s extremely walkable from the Royal Hungarian Opera and Saint Stephens Basilica. It has a separate bar located inside as well serving up some great local beers and various other drinks.

My boyfriend and I decided for our first langos to go for the traditional with garlic on it. While I waited in the long line– which I will note is long no matter the day of the week or the time, he got us beers, opting for our favourite, the Czech Pilsner Urquell. From the bar and found two seats for us.

Once you order you’re given a number to show on your table and you can wait for the fresh langos to be delivered to your seat. I will note that the menu includes ‘regular’ eats as well such as salad or chicken dishes.

Truly, for a street food and cheap beer experience, I don't think I’ll ever stop thinking about it. Even right  after finishing our food I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every time we passed a langos stand or restaurant we were truly hooked.

Caravan Food Market: Another Budapest Langos Favorite

Cheesy bread langos on a table in a colorful cafe, with blurred red, green, and blue lights hanging above, creating a cozy atmosphere.

While all we wanted the rest of our trip was to eat langos again, we did have to refrain, but we did enjoy another one more time at the Caravan food market located right next to Budapest’s most famous ruin bar, Szimpla Kert.

We entered right before closing after a few hours exploring the ruin bar and were quickly served without a line. It was also great that we had time to eat another traditional langos, and weren’t rushed out of the market like many other places might have done. Something I liked about this langos stand is that the garlic was served as a self-serve garlic oil which was delicious and lacked the slightly bitter bite the garlic left on our first langos. The only complaint was that the langos felt a bit pricey, but it made sense based on its location and status as a perfect post-drinking bite.

While there are plenty of street foods out there, I truly don’t think I’ll stop counting down the days until my next langos. Another trip to Budapest may just need to be in the works for me, even if just for the day and for a langos.
