Located just over a half an hour ferry ride away from the historic district of Ibiza, is the breathtaking island of Formentera. Formentera is a stretch of island that is surrounded by crystal clear waters in the Balearic Sea. The sand is soft and light in color. Most notably though, a long stretch of the island is so thin you can see the sea on both sides of the land making for a breathtaking view.
To book the ferry, we went through the app Get Your Guide and booked a round trip ticket with our selected departure and return times giving us enough time for a half a day on the island. The ferry boat to Formentera is fairly large and it’s easy to find a seat upon the embankment. There are some cafes near the port, so I recommend grabbing some food to bring with you. My boyfriend and I grabbed a pastry and a cafe con leche to bring with us. Once on the ferry there isn’t much to do aside from watch out the window, but the views are beautiful, although maybe I am biased to the sights of crystal waters.
When first disembarking the ferry on the island you will see a lot of cars and taxis, a few stores, places to rent vespas, and some bars and places to grab food. To get to the beach you can walk, but it is about a half an hour walk and certainly could feel like longer in the heat of the summer. If you choose to not walk you can find a taxi when first exiting the boat, or you can even rent a bike or vespa.
At the time of my visit I had torn my MCL and was in a knee brace so a bike and vespa were out of my ideas of possibilities. Walk was brutal, but we decided to take that route to take in the sights (I also will admit I didn’t realize how long of a walk it was, otherwise a taxi would have been my choice). The views really were incredible though of the sand and shore meeting. The water was so blue I truly was mesmerized, but the sun and my knee made for a very slow and hot walk. I will also mention, when walking there are not many places to stop and rest, and there are even less places to seek shade when the sun's rays are beating on you.
Now I know I am making this sound treacherous, keep in mind I also was slightly handicapped and probably made a poor decision in walking, but I can honestly say it was worth the struggle. Formentera is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever gotten to visit, I mean, take a look for yourself.

On the beach we laid out a blanket and tanned for some time. We took the occasional break to go swimming, and in July the water was a perfect temperature. Not too cold, but cold enough to cool you down in the sweltering heat.
We walked around taking in the different sides of the beach and explored the different views it had to offer and soaking in the calmness of the area we were in. While the beach wasn’t empty, it was easy to find solitude and quiet should you seek it out. At times, it was so peaceful it felt like we were the only ones around.
Like I mentioned, there is not much shade so depending on the time of year the sun really is incredibly strong in Formentera, so be prepared. Bring some sun protection and be ready to sweat. Most importantly, don’t forget some water to stay hydrated.
The beach had a restaurant at its entrance, but I did not see much food besides that. We had eaten on the ferry so we weren't hungry enough to give the restaurant a go, but in passing it did look quite nice.
Having our flight home that night, we had a shorter day on the island so we decided to take a taxi back to the main hub of the island. There we got a delicious cup of gelato while waiting for our ferry back.
Overall, the round trip was very easy to make, and even with the time it took I would highly recommend anyone with an extra day in Ibiza to make the ‘trek.’ To this day I can’t get the astonishing image of the sea, sand, and sun out of my mind.
Formentera was truly such an enchanting spot that I find myself regularly thinking a half day couldn’t have possibly been enough. Having enjoyed the peace of the island so much, my boyfriend and I now keep finding ourselves circling back and considering taking a trip solely to Formentera.
