In Gothenburg, one special food experience that can’t be missed is Feskekörka, or the “Fish Church.” As Gothenburg is a harbor city, it is a hub for excellent and fresh seafood year-round. Feskekörka was opened in 1874 and was quickly called the Fish Church by locals due to its church-like exterior. Since its first introduction over 150 years ago, Feskekörka has gone through two major renovations: once in the 1960s and more recently in 2020. Originally, the building was primarily used for the sale of fish and seafood, but during its first major renovation, it also became a hub for people to gather for food and drinks.
Feskekörka, Gothenburg: A Unique and Historic Seafood Market
As I mentioned, the exterior of Feskekörka closely resembles that of a church, with one roof leading to a large point at the top. One of my favorite details, though, is the tile design of three fish right outside the entrance. When inside the building, the market stalls are on both the left and right sides of the main walkway down the middle. Everything is very bright, airy, and modern, with large windows letting in the natural daylight. Down the center, you will see long rows of seating for diners with scattered tables as well. Restaurants and bars offer an impressive selection of fresh catches. For dinner service, there is also a restaurant that is almost like a loft overlooking the ground floor, where most of Feskekörka’s offerings are available.
It is the perfect combination of local dining and culinary shopping. Blending local dining with local catches, something I find to be incredibly unique and well thought out. This allows for a seamless blend of deliberately curated menus and ever-changing plates that showcase what Feskekörka truly has to offer.
Lunch at the Fish Church: Seasonal Seafood Menu
For lunch, there is only one main dining service available with a set rate and menu. This menu changes weekly based on what’s in season and what the market stall’s fresh catches of the week are. As part of the lunch special, our meals came with a slightly pickled side salad to start, a main dish of our choosing, and coffee for dessert. I have to point out that the selection of main dishes was quite limited, so I do recommend looking up the lunch menu before your visit, especially if you are quite picky with seafood and fish. If you are open to options, though, this menu is set at a great price to get to experience such a unique setting and try some wonderful food.
My boyfriend and I both ended up ordering the same thing, a seafood wallenbergare. Wallenbergare is a traditional Swedish dish typically made of breaded ground veal, so it only felt right to give the authentic choice a go. The other option was a seafood linguini which sounded delicious as well. Our seafood wallenbergare was served over a delicious potato puree with a side of peas and accompanying dill and lemon to use as needed. To round out our meal, we also ordered a smooth and well-balanced glass of red wine each.

Why Feskekörka Is a Must-Visit in Gothenburg
While we personally did not end up loving the wallenbergare itself overall due to the texture, it was great to try such fresh seafood, especially knowing that it was caught locally. It was also a perfect spot to people-watch: from men in business meetings to retirees catching up over coffee, Feskekörka is definitely a place that suits anyone and everyone's needs for a meal or a shop.
If we were to go back to Feskekörka, I think a dinner time visit would make more sense, so we can explore the a la carte menu. While the lunch set menu was an excellent deal, the a la carte had so much more to offer, especially when you are a picky eater. With access to a kitchen I’d even consider coming back just to purchase some of the beautiful catches from the local fisherman to bring back home and prepare myself.
If nothing else, Feskekörka is not the place to be missed. Its historic place, ingrained in Gothenburg’s culture, offers a rich history and beautiful ambience unlike most places I’ve been to.
